What is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan is the scoring system at the heart of Kundli matching. It compares eight factors, known together as the Ashtakoota, and adds them into a total out of 36 points.
The eight Kootas
- Varna (1): broad temperament and work nature.
- Vashya (2): mutual influence and give-and-take.
- Tara (3): health and fortune indicators from the birth stars.
- Yoni (4): instinctive and physical compatibility.
- Graha Maitri (5): mental and intellectual friendship.
- Gana (6): temperament and conduct.
- Bhakoot (7): overall well-being and prosperity of the pair.
- Nadi (8): health and progeny indicators.

What the total means
The maximum is 36. Many traditions treat totals of roughly 18 and above as workable, but this varies. A higher number means more indicators align — it is not a promise of a happy marriage. See Is 28/36 good? for a common example.
Why the score is only part of the picture
Traditional analysis weighs individual factors and their context, not just the total. Some factors, such as Nadi, carry specific considerations. A Guna Milan score is best read as guidance for reflection, not a verdict.
