What is Kundli matching?
A simple guide to how traditional Vedic marriage compatibility is assessed.
Kundli matching is a traditional Vedic method of comparing two birth charts to understand how compatible two people are considered for marriage. It is also called Kundli Milan or horoscope matching.
What birth details are needed
For each person you need a date of birth, a time of birth and a birth place. The time and place matter because they determine the position of the Moon, which is central to the calculation.
Guna Milan: the 36-point system
The most common method is Guna Milan, which compares eight factors (the Ashtakoota) and adds up to a maximum of 36 points. Each factor looks at a different area of compatibility, from temperament to emotional and physical harmony.
What a score does and does not mean
A higher score suggests that more of the traditional indicators align. But a score is only one perspective. Traditional astrologers also consider other factors and context, and no score can capture the full reality of a relationship. Communication, shared values and effort matter far more than any single number.
