Your Kundli can look like a puzzle the first time you see it. Here is a calm, plain-language walk through the parts that matter, so you can actually read your own chart.

What a Kundli actually is
A Janam Kundli is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It records where the Sun, Moon and the other grahas sat across twelve houses. Everything else in Vedic astrology is read from this one chart.
You need three things for an accurate chart: your date of birth, your time of birth and your birth place. Time matters most, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours.
Start with your Lagna (Ascendant)
The Lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It anchors the whole chart and sets which house each sign occupies. Think of it as the lens through which you meet the world.
Then your Moon sign and Nakshatra
Your Moon sign (Rashi) describes your emotional and instinctive self, and is what most daily horoscopes are based on. Your Nakshatra, the lunar mansion the Moon occupied, adds a finer layer of temperament and also seeds your dasha timeline.
The twelve houses and nine grahas
Each house governs an area of life. A quick map:
- 1st: self, body, first impressions
- 2nd: money, family, speech
- 4th: home, mother, inner peace
- 7th: marriage and partnerships
- 10th: career and public life
- The nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) each sit in a sign and house, colouring that part of life.
Dashas: the timing layer
The Vimshottari Dasha divides your life into planetary periods that run in a fixed 120-year cycle. The period you are in now shows which graha is most active for you at the moment. It is the reason two people with similar charts can be in very different phases.
Read doshas without fear
Conditions like Manglik, Sade Sati and Kaal Sarp describe specific placements, not curses. A good reading tells you whether one is present and what it practically means, with a calm perspective. Treat every reading as guidance for reflection, not a fixed verdict.
