Which Mahadasha Are You Running? A Simple Guide to Vimshottari Dasha
Two people can have almost the same chart and yet live very different years. The reason is often the dasha — the planetary period running in their life. Here is how it works, without the jargon.

What a Mahadasha is
Vimshottari Dasha divides life into nine planetary periods, called Mahadashas, that always run in the same order and total 120 years. Whichever planet's period you are in tends to shape the themes of those years — the areas of life it governs come forward.
The nine periods and their lengths
Each Mahadasha lasts a fixed number of years:
- Ketu 7 · Venus 20 · Sun 6 · Moon 10 · Mars 7
- Rahu 18 · Jupiter 16 · Saturn 19 · Mercury 17
- They always follow this sequence, then repeat.
How your current period is found
The dasha you start life in is decided by the Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth. From there the periods roll forward in the fixed order. That is why your exact birth time and Moon position matter — they set where you are in the cycle today.
What each Mahadasha tends to bring
These are tendencies for reflection, not fixed outcomes:
- Jupiter: growth, learning, faith, opportunities
- Saturn: discipline, patience, hard-earned results
- Venus: relationships, comfort, creativity
- Sun: authority, recognition, self-definition
- Mercury: communication, business, study
Antardasha: the period within the period
Each Mahadasha is divided into sub-periods (Antardashas) run by every planet in turn. The combination of the main lord and the sub-lord fine-tunes the flavour of a stretch of months — which is why a long Mahadasha still has ups and downs inside it.
