How to read your Kundli
A plain-language walk through the parts of a Janam Kundli — no jargon.
A Kundli (Janam Kundli or birth chart) is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. It looks complicated at first, but it is built from just a few pieces. Once you know what each piece means, the chart starts to read like a map. You can generate your free Kundli by date of birth and follow along.
1. The ascendant (Lagna)
The ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time. It sets the starting point of the whole chart, which is why an accurate birth time matters. You can also find it on its own with the ascendant (lagna) calculator.
2. The 12 houses
The chart is divided into twelve houses, each covering an area of life — self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, marriage, longevity, fortune, career, gains and losses. Whatever planet or sign sits in a house colours that part of life.
3. Planets and signs
